St. Albans High School - WW2, Korea, and Vietnam Veteran Fatalities
The West Virginia Veteran's Memorial, on the Capitol grounds in Charleston, WV, honors and commemorates the incredible sacrifice of thousands of West Virginian's in the defense of liberty over the past one hundred years.
In World War II, 7050 West Virginians gave their lives and are honored on the Memorial. Of those, 725 were from Kanawha County. Sixty-Four of these, at least, have ties to St. Albans, though certainly more are connected to the larger St. Albans community. These 64 were either born in St. Albans, lived here, or are buried in Cunningham Cemetery. Of these 64, we could identify five who attended St. Albans High School, though this number is likely higher.
In the Korean War, 1388 West Virginians lost their lives in service to the nation, 175 from Kanawha County. At least thirteen have connections to St. Albans, and two graduated from SAHS.
In the Vietnam War, 1184 WVians gave the ultimate sacrifice. 132 were from Kanawha County, with 14 connected to St. Albans in some way. One SAHS graduate served and died in Vietnam.
These eight soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are commemorated on this website:
Lewis Arthur Edwards, WW2
Roy Lee Ferrell, WW2
James H Mitchell, WW2
Archie Hendricks Shelton, WW2
Joseph Dewitt Specht, WW2
James Brooks Murray, Korea
Woodford Wilson Sutherland, Korea
Frank March Jr., Vietnam
I hope you find their stories inspirational, as our students have. In future years we will work to identify more veterans from the SAHS community, and to honor their sacrifices here.
